芬兰语学习日记 Diary of Finnish studying

Diary of Finnish studying,

I started learning Finnish from this Wednesday, and I have been warned that it is the most difficult language in the world. I don’t know if it is really the most difficult one or not, is there a language which is even more difficult than Chinese? Now I have a chance to experience learning a difficult second language, maybe I can understand how did my students feel when they were learning Chinese, I pushed them pretty hard  J  gave them much homework, and the tests were not so easy… they were challenging the square Chinese character, and the tones, and Chinese culture, they are heroes!

Many people think that European languages are similar to English, easy to learn if you know English already, it is true if you just consider Germany, French, Swedish, or Spanish, they are all from the Indo-European family, but unfortunately Finnish doesn’t belong to that family, not even their relatives, it belongs to the Ugrian language family, a kind of agglutinative language which I have heard before, now I am touching it.

I guess people think Finnish is difficult mostly because of its grammar, they told me comparing to Finnish, Chinese and English have no grammar at all. For me, Finnish grammar is just putting lots of tails (endings and suffixes) on the words instead of using lots of function words (like preposition, conjunction, and so on) which are used a lot in Chinese and English.

This is my impression about Finnish before I learn it, maybe right, maybe not, we will see.
